Let’s get straight to the good stuff! As I mentioned in my last post, Disney had a passion like no other. He had wanted to create joy for those around him. Thus The Walt Disney Company was born! Initially he did this to make movies and share his movies and short films, but he wanted a place that entrapped the happiness that his movies conveyed. It was because of this dream of Walt’s that Disneyland was created.

Disneyland first opened in July of 1955. Finances for the park proved to be difficult to come by. It wasn’t until ABC cut a deal to produce a weekly show as well as take in a portion of the park profits. And thus the ABC/Disney relationship was born. Construction for Disneyland Park started in 1955. The themed areas originally opened in Disneyland were Main Street, U.S.A., evoking a Midwestern American town at the turn of the 20th century; Fantasyland, based partly on stories from Disney animated features; Adventureland, a jungle-themed area; Frontierland, featuring the Mark Twain Riverboat; and Tomorrowland, an optimistic vision of the future. And as we have come to know, Disney often enjoyed to think about the future.
Parks aside, we have all seen at least one or two or even all of the Disney movies. Something you may not have known is that today Disney own many movie producing companies. So now along with their own movies from Disney Animation, they own ABC, ESPN, Touchstone Pictures, Marvel, Lucasfilm, A&E, The History Channel, Lifetime, Pixar, Hollywood Records, Vice Media, and Core Publishing. Would Walt be proud of all of these companies that his company controls? Would he be upset? Most of his viewings tend to say that he was really there to continue making magic and that that was all he truly wanted to do. Personally, I think Disney would be beside himself, and very disappointed in how industry the company has become.
While the magic of the movies and parks prompts us to come back and continue watching and listening, we are missing the values that Walt had built this company on. His goals of the company being family-oriented were accomplished, although at what cost to his workers now. Nowadays it has shown difficult to create these extraordinary movies, where a normal animated movie timeline can take up to 4-7 years, the company is being demanded movies and sequels and its because of this that we do lose some of the creativity that enchants our minds in viewing these films that we come to love.

With the example of Frozen versus Frozen 2, while both show to be amazing animated films, there is one scene in Frozen 2 that I personally fell may have been rushed in production, or maybe just not entirely thought through. Kristoff has a song he sings called “Lost in the Woods,” it is an amazing song! But you can tell that the animation for the song may have been rushed. The piecing of it together reminds me of an old music video that doesn’t have a plot. Ultimately music videos tend to have a story that they follow, and while the song paints it out for us, and there are bits and pieces of the animation that seem coherent, there are fillers that show the reindeer with a black background singing. To me, this seems lazy, and not thought through. This film Kristoff very much seemed to become a side character and the most we see him on screen is during this song, so why don’t they do him justice? The only explanation I can come up with is that the animators were given an unrealistic deadline and couldn’t give this scene the proper time to make it excellent.
Therefore I believe that Walt wouldn’t be pleased with how the company has become so industry controlled. I do however think that he would love the work that the animation studio is doing, although he might agree that with time the film would grow and become better. Animated films are almost like fine wines, the longer you give yourself to work on it, the better it will come out. A good example of this is the Pixar film Incredibles 2. Drop a comment below and let me know what you think! Do you agree that Disney has become an industry run company? or not? Comment too what you think I should write in the future!
